Last year we ran our car with a baseball theme. “Who’s on First Racing” was the team’s name and anticipated the pandemonium we expected would be our fate in road racing a $500 crap can. As it turned out, there wasn’t nearly as much panic as I anticipated. (Except racing in the dark with virtually no headlights… but that’s another post for another day).
This year, we’re going for a Mazda Racer theme. The Le Mans winning Mazda 787B is a nice looking race car. Our $500 racer isn’t. But with a little bondo and paint we should be able to make this:
Look almost exactly like this:

The Le Mans Winning Mazda 787. Just a little bondo and paint and our $500 racer should look just like this.
Update: 2012.01.28
Dennis has been quietly working away on the re-theme. Today I got to see the theme in-progress. Witness Dennis’ fine rattle-can paint job (painting of course right over last year’s race inflicted dents). I previously assisted with some of the bad body prep, but this was the first time I saw paint. Today we added decals and began adding the dotted lines (white electrical tape).
Update 2011.01.29. Re-theme Complete
We completed the re-theme today. It takes a surprising amount of time to put all of those little 4 inch long pieces of white electrical tape on the car. I’m liking it. Orange and green aren’t my favorite colors by a long shot, but it actually looks like a race car now. Less junkyard dog, more low-rent NASA racer. Not bad.

Great story!!
